England v Mexico - World Cup betting preview

Published

England walk the ultimate atmospheric gauntlet on Sunday night as Thomas Tuchel’s side head into the high-altitude cauldron of the Estadio Azteca to battle co-hosts Mexico for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Topping Group L was supposed to cushion the blow of the knockout rounds, but a grueling 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo has dumped the Three Lions straight into a partisan lion's den.

Javier Aguirre’s El Tri are riding a wave of national euphoria after dismantling Ecuador 2-0 to end a painful 40-year knockout drought, albeit in a round of 32 that has never before featured at a World Cup tournament.

Mexico have won all four of their tournament fixtures on home soil without conceding a single goal, meaning England's tournament-best underlying attacking numbers are about to collide with a defensive wall that has yet to crack.

Team news and lineups

England

Thomas Tuchel is managing a full-blown crisis on the flanks. With Tino Livramento a pre-tournament casualty, and Jarell Quansah joining Reece James in the treatment room, the German manager has no choice but to field a makeshift backline, with Djed Spence’s torrid game against Congo adding fuel to the fire.

Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson will need to screen their vulnerable back line more effectively against better opposition, allowing Jude Bellingham to dictate the tempo and feed England’s top-scorer Harry Kane.

Bukayo Saka remains a doubtful starter on the right wing and might again have to settle for making an impact off the bench, something Anthony Gordon did to great effect against Congo when he assisted in both of Harry Kane’s vital goals.

  • England predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Spence, Konsa, Guehi, O'Reilly; Rice, Anderson; Saka, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane

Mexico

Javier Aguirre is highly likely to stick with the incredibly disciplined 4-3-3 system that has kept four consecutive clean sheets. Center-back César Montes will continue to marshal the backline in front of goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, but the hosts have received a monumental boost with captain Edson Álvarez pushing for a return to the starting XI after overcoming a midfield knock.

Up front, the physical presence of Raúl Jiménez will act as the focal point, creating space for Mexico’s standout transition threat, Julián Quiñones, to cut inward from the right wing against England’s depleted full-back pairing.

  • Mexico predicted lineup (4-3-3): Rangel; Sanchez, Montes, Vasquez, Gallardo; Mora, Lira, Romo; Quiñones, Alvarado, Jiménez

Mexico vs England preview

This fixture centres on an intriguing statistical paradox: England’s relentlessly high non-penalty xG numbers squaring off against a Mexican defence that has defied underlying metrics all summer.

While El Tri have been impressive on paper, scoring eight and conceding zero, a deeper look suggests they are prime candidates for negative regression.

Aguirre's men have scored those eight goals from a modest 4.5 expected goals (xG), with a significant portion of that attacking output heavily padded against a nine-man South Africa in the group stages.

Furthermore, their round-of-32 victory over Ecuador saw them convert two goals from just 1.05 xG. England, sitting fourth in the world rankings, represent a massive upward shift in quality compared to anything Mexico have faced so far in North America.

Tactically, the battle will be won or lost in how Tuchel manages the severe physical toll of playing 2,200 meters above sea level.

England cannot afford the high-pressing, end-to-end chaos they displayed in their 4-2 opening win over Croatia; the altitude will drain their energy reserves inside the first hour. Instead, expect Rice and Anderson to slow the game down, dominating lateral possession to quiet the 87,000-strong home crowd.

The burden of unlocking Mexico’s low block falls on Harry Kane, who enters the tie in record-breaking form after netting a high-quality double against DR Congo.

Kane’s ability to drop deep and drag César Montes out of position will be vital to opening up central lanes for Bellingham's late box entries. Conversely, England's makeshift full-backs face a terrifying night tracking Quiñones.

If Mexico can isolate Quiñones against a struggling Djed Spence on the counter-attack, they can absolutely breach Jordan Pickford's goal. But if England's technical quality can starve the Mexican midfield of supply, the Three Lions' squad depth should ultimately see them through.

If you aren’t convinced in England’s ability to keep finding a way, then a sensible play may be on the 0 Asian handicap or draw no bet market. Alternatively, the combination of their leaky defence and prolific forward adds appeal to a win and both teams to score at a big price.
