Betting on the Top Bundesliga Goal Scorers

Published

While host nation Germany may have been eliminated from Euro 2024 at the quarter-final stage, the tournament provided a superb showcase for several of the Bundesliga’s biggest stars.

To this end, three of the tournament’s six joint-top scorers currently ply their trade in the German Bundesliga, raising the league’s burgeoning profile further and potentially creating a spike in demand for domestic betting.

Certainly, Euro 2024 will have piqued the interest of tipsters and fans from across the globe, while understated players like RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo have now become household names. But which other Bundesliga stars performed well in Germany, and will wagering on this league become the next big football betting trend?

Which Bundesliga Stars Fared Well at the Euros?

Under normal European Championship rules, Leipzig’s Dani Olmo would have been crowned the outright top scorer at Euro 2024. This is because he contributed two assists in addition to his three goals, but UEFA decided to adjust the rules and eliminate the tiebreaker when players scored the same number of goals.

His five goal involvements also came during just 431 minutes of action, meaning that Olmo contributed a goal or an assist every 86.2 minutes. It’s incredible to think that he was used as a substitute for much of the tournament’s group stage too, as he only stepped into La Roja’s starting 11 after an injury to Pedri in the quarterfinals.

Bayern’s Jamal Musiala also starred in front of his home fans, while he joined Olmo in the Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament. Musiala scored three times (including a superb second in the 2-0 round of 16 victory over Denmark) and completed a staggering 32 dribbles.

Only Jeremy Doku (34) completed more dribbles at the tournament, while Musiala made 14 key passes across the whole of Euro 2024 and completed 11 passes into the attacking third.

England captain Harry Kane was another of Euro 2024’s joint-top scorers, notching once during the group stages and in subsequent knockout matches against Slovakia and the Netherlands.

This feat was all the more remarkable given that Kane toiled physically throughout the tournament, struggling with his attacking movement and often failing to stretch opposition defences.

However, he was as predatory as ever in the penalty area, building on a debut Bundesliga season that saw him score 44 times in 45 matches for Bayern Munich.

Why Did Bundesliga Players Star?

The recent success of the Bundesliga and its stars came despite a lack of sizable financial resources or spending.

During the 2023/24 campaign, for example, English Premier League clubs spent the cumulative amount of €2.93 billion on players. Conversely, Bundesliga sides spent just €859.38 million in total, while selling an incredible €1.07 billion worth of talent.

However, the Bundesliga is built on the identification of young and affordable talent, which is often procured from overseas. This includes players such as Jadon Sancho (who previously starred for Borussia Dortmund) and the aforementioned Dani Olmo, who arrived in Germany hungry to make his mark and gain first-team football.

This has undoubtedly contributed to a vibrant, youthful and exciting competition, and one which attracts higher average live attendances than any other ‘Big 5’ league. It also encourages clubs to foster and develop young players, some of whom excelled on the Euro 2024 stage.

The Growing Trend for Bundesliga Betting - And How to Leverage it

The performance of players like Olmo and Musiala will have also sparked greater interest in the Bundesliga, among both spectators and punters alike.

Another key factor behind this trend is Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten title win in the 2023/24 campaign. This ended Bayern’s 11-year title winning streak, blowing the competition wide open and creating more evenly priced betting markets in the process.

While more people may be inclined to bet on a diverse range of competitively priced Bundesliga markets in 2024/25, the challenge for punters will be identifying the best value lines. After all, competitive odds are derived from close markets with a number of potential outcomes, especially outrights such as the league winner and top scorer.
