Road to the Euros

Denmark went unbeaten in qualifying having managed four wins and four draws. It was enough to see them finish three points clear of Ireland to secure a second place finish, and they were only a single point behind Switzerland. It was an extremely competitive group which was decided late in many matches, with as many as 17 goals being scored in the final 10 minutes of games. Seven of those went in favour of Denmark, including three in the final five minutes against Switzerland. Equally, they conceded a pair of equalisers at the death against Ireland. They might need to improve on aspects of qualifying but the final stat line reads qualified, unbeaten and just six goals conceded in eight games. Job done.

Current form

With the qualifiers for the tournament a full 19 months behind us now, more can be taken from Denmark’s recent world cup qualifiers and their Nations League campaign. Only Belgium have beaten them since qualifying and their Nations League campaign began with a 3-0 romp in Iceland. That was swiftly followed by a 1-0 win in England and a classy defensive showing. Denmark’s world cup qualifiers have the potential to be tricky, but they’ve already won comfortably in Israel. Perhaps their most pleasing recent performance was the 4-0 hammering of Austria away from home. They’ll need similar level of performances to see off Finland and Russia, but the Danes will need to up their game on the big stage as they have failed to really show up for a tournament this century.

Squad assessment

There is no doubting the overall ability of the squad. Each of the expected starting line-up ply their trade in either the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A or Bundesliga. And so do a few of the substitutes. The thing you notice most about the Danish XI is the potential they have to be stubborn. Delaney and Hojbjerg are as good as any in their protective roles, whilst the back four is packed with Champions League experience. Behind them is Premier League winner and reliable one-man wall in the shape of Kasper Schmeichel. The one criticism would be where does the creativity come from if not Christian Eriksen, a player Belgium in particular may be able to take out of the game..

Key players

Christian Eriksen is without doubt the star man. The Danes will need to find ways to keep getting him on the ball if they’re to unlock the better sides, including Belgium, and anyone they may encounter in the knockout stages. The back four and Schmeichel will be busy, but the role of Hojbjerg will be so crucial in relieving pressure and allowing Eriksen the opportunity to get on the ball in space.
