Group A form guide

  • Italy will be keen to make up for the ignominy of having missed out on qualification for the 2018 World Cup, and Roberto Mancini has succeeded in bringing his side back as an international force. They romped to the finals by winning all ten of their qualifying games, scoring 37 goals in the process and conceding just three.
  • Switzerland won both of their recent World Cup qualifiers, but have come up short against Europe’s elite, suffering recent defeats against Spain, Belgium, Croatia and Ukraine, and they might well struggle in this competitive group.
  • Turkey bounced back from an under-par Nations League campaign to earn impressive wins over Netherlands (4-2) and Norway (3-0) in their opening World Cup qualifiers, and might just surprise a few at the Euros if they can maintain that recent form.
  • Wales will be keen to rekindle their semi-final heroics of the 2016 tournament. Their only defeats in eleven games since lockdown were in England (0-3) and Belgium (1-3), while six of their seven wins have been by a 1-0 scoreline, highlighting both their defensive resilience and their lack of cutting edge.

Crunch games

Assuming that Italy carry their impressive recent form into the tournament, then they should emerge as Group A winners, for which they are justifiable favourites. That leaves every match between the remaining three countries as potential crunch games, especially as third place could be enough to qualify for the second round. If Wales are still in with a shout on June 20th, then their game in Rome will be immense, while the loser of the final Switzerland v Turkey will probably find themselves bottom of the table.
