- Belgium were nearly the definition of perfect during qualifying. They won all 10 group games and scored 40 goals in the process. The only thing that blotted their copy book was conceding twice against Russia and allowing Cyprus a surprise opener in their final qualifier, although they did go on to win that game 6-1. Expectations are high after Belgium’s third place finish at the World Cup and they’ve only lost twice in 27 games since beating England. They’ll need to reach the final to go one better and that’s a possibility.
- Denmark will want to improve on their 2018 World Cup showing. They managed just one win and three goals before being dumped out on penalties by Croatia. Denmark were unbeaten in qualifying but it wasn’t all straightforward. Romps against Gibraltar ensured their goal difference was superior to the Republic of Ireland, but they struggled against Georgia and were given a fortunate late reprieve against the Swiss. They did the job they set out to do, but the level of performance will need to improve.
- Russia qualified extremely comfortably from their group, but it’s tough to assess their campaign. The only real challenge was Belgium, who twice blew them away. Despite their strong World Cup campaign, Russia have since been humbled by lesser sides than Belgium and Denmark. Their last two competitive games saw them lose 3-2 to Turkey and 5-0 to Serbia.
- Finland are not to be written off, although the expectation is they will find the level of this group too hot to handle. They arguably have one of the tournament's top goalkeepers and Teemu Pukki is a goal threat at any level. Qualifying saw them beat Greece and Bosnia and they were rather unlucky to lose to Italy. If they can display the levels of organisation that saw them keep six clean sheets in qualifying, it’s not impossible to imagine them picking up a sneaky 1-0 win somewhere.
Crunch games
Belgium are the firm favourites to win Group B. They beat Russia 3-1 and 4-1 in qualifying for the tournament and you would expect them to have the edge over them again and also Finland. The most unpredictable team in the group might be Denmark. They may be an inconsistent side, but we have seen them beat top teams recently, and somewhat uncharacteristically they have been scoring goals for fun. Denmark vs Belgium might help who wins the group, but either way it will be a game of interest to Russia, whose fixture with Denmark could go a long way to deciding who finishes second.
