  • Germany have become a hard team to figure out. Whilst they usually show up for tournaments, this is a new and less experienced group. There’s a transition happening and it hasn’t been without it’s blips. The Germans have lost just twice in 18 games, but there are some peculiar results there. They were beaten 2-1 by North Macedonia in World Cup qualifying and were humbled 6-0 by Spain. They also looked leaky but dangerous in 3-3 draws with Turkey and Switzerland. You would expect them to draw on home advantage to prevail in this group though.
  • France's overall form coming into the tournament has been excellent and in competitive football, their last loss came in a knockout game against Germany in 2014. They’ve made it through the last two tournaments without losing a single match in regular time. This is without doubt the strongest French team for decades. Despite that, there are some unknown variables at play, such as the location of the games, and in recent friendlies they have been beaten by minnows Finland. The most interesting thing to note is they’ve only won one of their last five meetings against teams in this group since their invincible run began.
  • Portugal is a team that has a chance of beating anyone in the world as long as Cristiano Ronaldo is on the pitch. This year's supporting cast, namely Joao Félix and Bruno Fernandes, might just help propel them to another level. Their tournament preparations have been good and have seen them hold Spain to a 0-0 draw before making light work of Israel. But there’s no doubt that all of their star players need to show up at once, and manage hostile atmospheres in Hungary and Germany, if they wish to escape the group.
  • Hungary are obviously big, big underdogs in this group. But they could also be a tournament dark horse. They have the luxury of playing France and Portugal on home soil in front of a big crowd. It’ll be a historic occasion that the players will feed off, and they have previously beaten World Cup finalists Croatia here in a competitive game in 2019. Their overall form coming into the tournament reads no losses in their last 11 games and many of you may remember the thrilling 3-3 draw with Portugal at the last championships, a result which helped them escape a tricky group.

Crunch games

In truth, every game is crucial. This is the group of death for obvious reasons, but even Hungary, widely expected to struggle, will have a big say. The fact all the group games will be played in Germany and Hungary levels the playing field. The biggest game is Germany vs France because it sets the tone, and if the world champions come unstuck at the Allianz Arena, then their trip to face Hungary next up becomes massive. And as long as there's a winner in Germany vs France, it opens the door up to whoever wants to win when Hungary hosts Portugal in their first games. Whatever way you look at it, every game is a crunch game with huge implications. This is a very competitive group.
