Wimbledon - Day Eight

Published

Monday produced some thrilling tennis for our viewing pleasure, least not the shock of Giles Muller beating Rafael Nadal 3-2 after a fascinating five-set affair.

It's a quiet day today with no action on the men's side of the draw originally scheduled. After the enthralling encounter between Giles Muller and Rafael Nadal yesterday evening, Djokovic's meeting with Mannarino was placed on hold until today. The pair will do battle at 13:00 shortly before the women's quarter-finals get underway.

What people are talking about...

\r\n\r\n

What people are talking about, and still will be for some time to come, is the battle between Giles Muller and Rafael Nadal yesterday.\r\n Giles Muller beat Nadal 3-2 after winning a thrilling tie-break 15-13. Both players had managed to hold their serve during every single game when Muller served himself into a 14-13 lead, and Nadal finally cracked. Muller play with ice in his veins throughout the tie-break whilst Nadal was much more animated and despite clawing himself back into the tie with fantastic tennis in crucial moments, Nadal also seemed more flustered. As well as being a rather big shock despite Muller's known ability and ranking, it was also perhaps the most exciting match of Wimbledon so far this year.

What the odds are saying...

\r\n\r\n

Novak Djokovic is the overwhelming favorite to progress this afternoon but if yesterday taught us anything it's that nothing can be taken for granted at Wimbledon. Giles Muller is a player of more pedigree than Mannarino on paper and you would expect the unranked competitor to struggle with Djokovic's game this afternoon. The big Serbian is best price 1/20 to make it through to the next round and you'd expect that to happen.

\r\n\r\n

Even when you look to set betting Novak Djokovic is priced at 2/5 to win 3-0 which is not a geat price. We don't even need to compare the quality of the players on show but Mannarino has more than proven his tenacity and at no point during this tie will he do himself a disservice by really allowing his head to drop. He also has the fine striking capabilities to punish any mistake Novak Djokovic may make.

\r\n\r\n

But Novak Djokovic looks as focused as ever and that could be the problem here for Mannarino. A focused Djokovic is one that doesn't seem to falter under any amount of pressure and one that wins titles. Djokovic came through some tough moments against Gulbis,\r\n but perhaps crucially during his 3-0 win allowed his opponent to take 11 games. The third set went to a tie-break that Djokovic dominated, but that set didn't pass without a scare or two. Mannarino has beaten 15th ranked Gael Monfils to reach this stage of the competition and given yesterday's events, there might be a bit of value in considering things like four or more sets in the tie. Are you even brave enough to stick a few quid on Mannarino at 15/1?
