Wimbledon - Day Nine

Published

Johanna Konta has made it through to her semi-final against Venus Williams and now it's up to Andy Murray to keep the British dream double on course.

It's a quiet day today with no action on the men's side of the draw originally scheduled. After the enthralling encounter between Giles Muller and Rafael Nadal yesterday evening, Djokovic's meeting with Mannarino was placed on hold until today. The pair will do battle at 13:00 shortly before the women's quarter-finals get underway.

What people are talking about...

\r\n\r\n

We know that Andy Murray will play his quarter-final match today when he faces 24th ranked Sam Querrey, but Johanna Konta has already gone one step further by reaching the semi-final stage of the tournament. There's been talk throughout, and indeed many are still dreaming of, a British double whereby Konta and Murray can both be successful. The open era of Wimbledon has rarely seen a Brit triumph, let alone two in one year which has never been done. But it's on this year!

\r\n\r\n

Wimbledon is, of course, no laughing matter, but every now and then something comes along that tickles you. The BBC has so kindly highlighted a spectator struggling to put his poncho on during the rain delay that delayed Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis' mixed doubles match. The video documenting the struggle goes on for 0:33 seconds and has been shared on the website. The struggle is actually expected to have gone on for almost two minutes as the man is seen removing the poncho at the end of the short clip, utterly perplexed!

What the odds are saying...

\r\n\r\n

The quarter-final draw is perfectly set up for a quite thrilling set of semi-finals. On paper, many will be looking forward to the possibility of Murray and Cilic and Raonic or perhaps more likely Federer and Djokovic. That's not only a tasty looking pair of encounters but also quite favorable in terms of Andy Murray reaching the finals. Whilst there is no easy game at this stage you can argue the likes of Querrey and Muller are easier than Federer or Djokovic in current form. Backing the British double can currently be done at around 11/1.

\r\n\r\n

But the big American Sam Querrey, 5/1, is likely to provide a very tough test for Andy Murray who is a strong favorite at 3/16. The Brit has been triumphant in two of the last three years and perhaps still has more to give this time around but he is playing well. We know that Querrey won't go away having beat tricky opponents in Tsonga and Anderson in five sets, but on paper, it's as winnable a tie as Murray could have hoped for.

\r\n\r\n

Roger Federer, despite being priced at 2/9, perhaps has the toughest task of all of the top-ranked players against Milos Raonic. The Canadian saw off a handy looking Alexander Zverev in the last round, winning 3-2 and having to come from two sets down. Raonic showed his class in the later stages and wrapped up a 6-1 fifth set win, but the game could have been very different. This is a bit of a coin toss if Raonic shows up to the big occasion and he can be backed at 43/10

\r\n\r\n

Novak Djokovic is 1/4 favorite against Tomas Berdych and those odds may appear a little slim given that Djokovic was not afforded a day off yesterday. After Nadal's classic with Muller, Djokovic's game was pushed back to yesterday lunch-time. Djokovic wrapped up a 3-0 victory in quick time to set up the tie with outsider Berdych, who can be backed at 62/17, and thus may have given himself enough time to recover amply.

\r\n\r\n

Finally, we've successfully given a nod in the right direction of the days potential shock a couple of times now. Whilst this is firmly not a betting tip, it's fair to argue that Giles Muller against Marin Cilic jumps out as the most likely 'shock' on day nine of the tournament. Muller has already had a fairytale Wimbledon having eliminated Marin Cilic and if he plays with ice in his veins again, he can see off Cilic.\r\n Marin Cilic is a clear favorite at 4/17 and Muller can be backed at 19/5. Those odds would likely have been more had Muller not beaten someone lesser than Nadal, but they're still potentially an attractive proposition.
