Wimbledon - Day Six

Published

Nadal, Murray, Cilic and Konta all breezed through yesterday but Kei Nishikori fell by the way side. Let's see what is in on store on day six.

Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray were comfortable on Friday afternoon as their pursuit of Wimbledon continued, and Marin Cilic also made it through. Kei Nishokori was beaten however, losing 3-1 to Robert Bautista Augt. Agut sits just nine spots behind Kei in the rankings so it perhaps doesn't constitute a surprise. Johanna Konta and Venus William made it comfortably through on the other side of the tournament and the day passed with less controversy than the previous.

What people are talking about...

\r\n\r\n

Andy Murray weighed in on the current hot topic yesterday when he offered verdicts on the playing surface after his 3-1 win over Fabio Fognini. Murray did criticise the quality of the courts when saying there are a few divots appearing, and Fabio Fognini went as far to say the surface is 'really, really bad' this year. But both still praised the ground staff for the job they do at Wimbledon and did recognise that it's been hard given the amount of sun and lack of rain this year. Fair play, we'll give them that. Who knew it could go a whole week without raining in England.

The fact that it was a quiet day with nothing to consider but good tennis and good sportsmanship was perhaps summed up by the Daily Mail. The newspaper main focus on day five was a 'who's who' of the royal box, with Dan Carter, Chris Robshaw, David Beckham (and Mummy Becks!) and Brian O'Driscoll were amongst the sporting royalty that were in the box on Friday.

What the odds are saying...

\r\n\r\n

The stingiest odds you'll find today are a pointless 1/20 in Roger Federer to overcome Zverev, who's brother Alexander is priced at 1/16 to beat Sebastien Ofner. Federer opponent aside Duda Sela is priced at 12/1 as he faces and uphill battle against Grigor Dimitrov in the first game of the day.

\r\n\r\n

Whilst Roger Federer is a likely winner it does seem harsh to Mischa Zverev is given less chance than anyone else of the day. The dangerous German is one off few players who posses the skills to trouble Roger Federer by matching his attacking approach, but Bet365 have Federer as low as 2/5 to win 3-0 in sets. Betting on Over 3.5 sets offers odds around even money (1/1) and is being taken on by some.

\r\n\r\n

Another outside possibility to consider is that Novak Djokovic's meeting with Ernests Gulbis may not be as cut and dry as turn up and win 3-0. Again, the odds do suggest that as a likely outcome, but writing off Gulbis after a surprise win over del Potro could be ignorant. Djokovic should progress overall but Over/Under on set betting could be one to consider here again. Over 3.5 sets is best price 11/8 whilst Under 3.5 is floating about around 5/17. You'll get as good as 27/4 if you're brave enough to bet on this one being a five set thriller.
