Wimbledon - Final Preview

Published

It's Wimbledon final day as Roger Federer and Marin Cilic do battle on the centre court.

It's Wimbledon final day! It was a shame to lose such names as Djokovic and Murray along the way to injury, but Marin Cilic has been thoroughly deserving of his place in the showpiece event. And so has Roger Federer who has been in scintillating form this year and was one of the favorites from the off.

Roger Federer vs Marin Cilic

We've all been in awe of the tennis that Roger Federer has played so far in this tournament, but it's ignorant to assume that there is only one winner here. Marin Cilic has had a number of close encounters with Roger Federer over the years and there's surely something in them he can use to his advantage. Let's not remember it was only one year ago that Cilic outplayed Federer to lead 2-0 in sets. Some match points went amiss in the fourth, and the rest was history. Federer may have dominated the overall head to head, but it's not been without some struggles.

A first Wimbledon final is a big mental challenge for any player and it's clear that is where Federer has the edge. Having the ability and experience to keep cool in those crucial moments and just play the game in front of you is one part of being a champion, but Marin Cilic isn't without grand slam experience. He's reached finals before and has a US Open to his name.

This game seems like it could be won or lost on the serve. Federer has been impeccable and near unbreakable on serve. To hold such a large percentage of your services games like Federer has done, and having that quality to break his opponent here and there, makes him seem a little bit invincible this year. But as good as his serve is, no one has fared better in their opponents service game this year than Marin Cilic. He's won 26 points on his opponents serves.

Now if we're to believe the odds the bookmakers are posting then this game is already done and dusted. Marin Cilic is a rank outsider priced as high as 4/1, but again, he did come close to beating Federer here last year and he's due one eventually. Federer has won seven of eight meetings and Cilic is possible too good a player not to pinch one back eventually. Is there just one last little upset left in this years wildly unpredictable Wimbledon?
