-
France will be keen to make a stylish defence of their World Cup crown, but in truth they have not been playing like world champions in recent times. Two defeats to Denmark and another against Croatia came in a disappointing Nations League campaign that saw just one solitary win (2-0 against bottom-placed Austria), and they will need their stars to shine more brightly if they are to replicate 2018's heroics. That said, they went to Russia amidst similar doubts, so it would be a brave move to write them off.
-
Denmark have emerged as one of Europe's most effective teams recently, and will have nothing to fear in this group - not even the French world champions, whom they beat home and away to pip them for top spot in their recent Nations League campaign. Coming just after an equally convincing qualifying campaign, the Danes will take high hopes with them to Qatar and might just be dark horses to go deep into the tournament.
-
Tunisia have been playing plenty of football in their preparations for the finals, but it's not easy to see them progressing from this competitive group. Useful wins against Japan and Chile during the summer showed they are not to be taken lightly, but September's 5-1 defeat to Brazil gives a more realistic picture of the challenges they will face in Qatar.
-
Australia had to endure a 21-game campaign to make the finals via two playoffs and ultimately a penalty shootout success against Peru. Since then, a couple of narrow wins over New Zealand represent their only warm-up games, and while they will be underdogs to progress, opponents will take the competitive Socceroos lightly at their peril.
Crunch games
Current World Cup holders, France, will kick off all of their Group D games as favourites to win, although their middle fixture against Denmark will be certain to test the champions. It's hard to see the Danes slipping up against either of the other two contenders, but if they did happen to lose to the French, then their final encounter against Australia might well turn into a qualification decider. Tunisia might prove hard to beat, but it's hard to imagine them finishing above either of the two European teams.
