FIFA World Cup

Brazil v Serbia

Brazil kick off the tournament as favourites to lift the World Cup, which is par for the course for the South American giants. They qualified as comfortable winners of the ten-team CONMEBOL group, with 14 wins from their 17 games, twelve of which were by at least a 2-goal margin. Their subsequent form has been equally impressive, with wins over Japan and Ghana sandwiched between impressive 5-1 romps against South Korea and Tunisia.

Brazil tournament odds: 10/3

Serbia were drawn alongside Brazil and the Swiss in 2018 also, losing to both of them after kicking off with a win against Costa Rica, and will be looking to erase that memory. They will be sweating on the fitness of talisman striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is their most potent threat, and whose last-gasp winner in their final qualifying game saw them leapfrog Portugal to book an automatic spot in Qatar. An equally impressive Nations league campaign saw Serbia top their group after beating Sweden home and away.

Serbia tournament odds: 90/1

With all the talent at their disposal, it’s hard to envisage Brazil failing at least to replicate the 2-0 win they enjoyed in their group stage meeting with Serbia in Russia. But sometimes the Brazilians can be slow starters, and meeting them in the first game might give Serbia hope of springing a surprise, especially given their progress since 2018, and even more so if Mitrovic is fit to start.

Match Betting Odds:

Brazil to win: 40/85

Serbia to win: 11/2

Draw: 10/3
