FIFA World Cup

Qatar v Senegal

All the hype and all the build-up was unable to prevent what always looked likely to happen for the home nation, as Qatar were made to look well out of their depth by a slick Ecuador outfit in Sunday’s World Cup curtain-raiser. Spared by a contentious VAR decision just two minutes in, Qatar’s defence was breached twice in the first half and managed just three brief touches of the ball in their opponent’s penalty area in what was a pretty abject display in front of a subdued crowd.

Qatar tournament odds: 1000/1

Senegal huffed and puffed but looked toothless going forward in their drab opening game against the Netherlands. In the absence of the sadly injured Sadio Mane, they lacked inventive spark going forward, and with neither team really deserving such a lacklustre encounter, it came as a surprise when the Dutch grabbed two late goals to give Senegal an uphill task to qualify.

Senegal tournament odds: 200/1

Defeat for either side will all but eliminate the losers, and the onus will be on Senegal to do the business against the weaker host nation. Qatar will hope to inspire a crowd that was quickly quietened on Sunday, but it’s difficult to see them having much to cheer about on Friday.

Match Betting Odds:

Qatar to win: 5/1

Senegal to win: 8/13

Draw: 13/5
