While that was going on, an ineffective performance saw Poland slip to a 2-0 defeat against Argentina, leading to a tense final few minutes, when another goal in either game could have proved crucial.

France will no doubt bring back their big guns for this knockout game, and if they fire, then they should have too much quality for a Polish side that is yet to sparkle. Poland’s hopes continue to rest on the shoulders of striker Robert Lewandowski, and he will not be unaware that the French defence has been breached in all three group games, and he will be a handful for them if given decent service.
