The Brazilian camp won’t be happy at losing their last Group G game 1-0 to Cameroon, even if they did take the opportunity to rest many of their first-choice line-up. In the end, however, they still topped the group, albeit only on goal difference ahead of Switzerland, and with that first objective safely accomplished, the South Americans can get on with the business end of the tournament.

South Korea were staring elimination in the face when they conceded in the fifth minute of their final group game against a somewhat depleted Portugal side. An equaliser before the half-hour mark gave them hope, and their endless endeavours were rewarded when Hee-Chan Hwang slotted home in the first minute of stoppage time to secure a dramatic win. They then endured an agonising wait before it was confirmed that Uruguay had fallen one goal short in their 2-0 win over Ghana to send the Koreans through on goals scored.

On paper, this looks like one of the mis-matches of the first knockout round, but Brazil will do well not to be complacent against a never-say-die South Korea side, who had to dig deep to qualify against all odds, and will see this game as something of a free hit against the tournament favourites.
