After securing qualification with victories over Ghana (3-2) and Uruguay (2-0) Portugal will be unfazed by their last-game defeat to South Korea, although their lacklustre display will not have made them many Uruguay friends, especially after they had taken an early lead. Finishing top of the group was still their achieved objective and coach Fernando Santos will have been happy to have had the opportunity to rest many of his squad in preparation for bigger challenges ahead.

Switzerland provided a mixed bag of results in the early group games, squeezing narrowly past Cameroon 1-0, and then conceding late on to be on the wrong end of the same scoreline against Brazil. They then found themselves 2-1down to Serbia in their decisive final game, before a goal either side of the break turned the game on its head to secure their passage to the last 16.

With so many of the competition’s most fancied teams already in the quarter finals, Portugal will not want to miss out on joining them. They have all the artistry and firepower to see off the Swiss, whose more methodical organised approach will make them difficult to break down without ever causing the Portuguese defence too many problems.
