England v France

England could not have hoped for a better performance or outcome from their last-16 tie with Senegal. Overcoming a difficult first half-hour that saw them struggle to pass between the Africans’ high-pressing lines, the game changed with Jordan Henderson’s tidy finish, and the tie was as good as over when Bellingham and Foden combined on a rapid counterattack to set up Harry Kane’s first goal of this tournament. Factor in Bukayo Saka’s deft second-half finish and a third straight clean sheet, and England go into this huge game buzzing with confidence.

England tournament odds: 13/2

France were equally impressive in the way they dismantled Poland on Sunday, with Olivier Giroud’s neat first-half finish easing French nerves with his 52nd international goal to become France’s all-time top scorer. The second half turned into the Kylian Mbappe show, as he supplemented his first-half assist with two stunning goals to put himself in the clear in the race for the Golden Boot, and Poland’s late penalty meant little to anyone other than Robert Lewandowski.

France tournament odds: 9/2

Going forward with the ball, England look a handful for anyone, and they have the pace and creative flair to prove a handful for the French defence. However, much will depend on how England defend out of possession, and especially how they deal with Mbappe. Kyle Walker might be able to match his pace, but it is unlikely he will contain him on his own, so we might see a more defensive England set-up as they double up down the right. Quarter finals are meant to be difficult to call, and this is no exception, but let’s just hope it’s decided by a stunning goal and not on penalties.
