Long losing runs are the punter's worst enemy. Not only do they eat into your bankroll but they can severely dent your confidence.

This is why for a couple of years now I have concentrated my selection criteria to just the top three in the betting. I do on occasion go for a bigger priced selection if I think there's value to be had, but by and large, the majority of my tips will be slanted towards the favourites.

Whilst getting a winner at 16/1 is always an amazing feeling, there aren't many tipsters who give these out with much regularity and there really isn't anything worse than having 10+ losers on the bounce!

Aiming for consistent and steady profits is the way I like to bet and I don't use conventional bookmakers either. I much prefer to use the Betfair Exchange - not only can you get a decent sized bet on, the prices are better and there's no chance of having your account closed by some spineless bookie because you've won a few hundred quid in a month.

If you're serious about making money from horse racing, my advice is to open a Betfair Exchange account with the lowest commission, which currently sits at 2%. You won't be getting any free bets on this tier of commission but why pay 5% just for the sake of a free £5 bet each month? It doesn't make financial sense.

When I've posted my selections for the day, try and get the best price you can or just opt for BSP (Betfair SP). If you're in a position to bet 15 minutes before the off, I would certainly advocate doing this.
