The betting odds on the next Premier League managers to be fired

Published

Among the Premier League’s beleaguered managers, there are already several contenders on the potential sacking list, and in this article, we look at who they are, how they’ve got themselves in the firing line, and what odds the bookmakers are offering for them to be next to get bullet.

Being the manager of an English Premier League club is surely one of the most precarious jobs around. When a team’s performance is sub-par over an extended period, it’s not long before the manager is put under the microscope, and dismissal is often the result.

Let's now focus back on the current EPL football manager situation and who the next one to go might be, starting with Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Favourite for the sack - Ruud van Nistelrooy (Leicester City)

Ruud van Nistelrooy might have been a great player, but after leading PSV Eindhoven to win the Johan Cruyff Shield and the Dutch Cup in 2023, his management career has since stalled. He resigned as manager of PSV in May 2023 after only 14 months in charge due to, as he put it, lack of support within the club.

Just over a year later, he was appointed assistant manager at Old Trafford to work alongside then-manager Erik ten Hag, subsequently taking over as interim manager of the Red Devils when ten Hag was sacked last October. Temporarily in charge, he did well, overseeing three wins and a draw from his four games in charge.

Unfortunately for him, United’s board decided to appoint a new head coach, Ruben Amorim, since when, according to some of the best football tipsters, United’s inconsistent form has made the odds on Amorim being fired drop to 20 to 1. Not the highest; however, his name is still on the list for the chopping block.

Van Nistelrooy only had to wait until late November for his next and current management appointment, when he became manager at Leicester City. Under their new manager, the team got off to a flying start, beating West Ham 3-1, but things have gone seriously downhill since then. Leicester have lost all but one of their last 10 fixtures, conceding 23 goals and scoring a miserable three. There can be little doubt that van Nistelrooy will go and the odds for doing so are 8/11.

However, not one to throw in the towel without a fight, van Nistelrooy is reported as saying, 'I’m not changing' as he aims to inspire a Foxes' turnaround

2nd Favourite for the sack - Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur)

Ange Postecoglou is something of an enigma. After a successful career in Australia and Scotland, the Greek/Australian is the latest of a long line of head coaches to come a cropper at Spurs. His management credentials seemed to be just the ticket when Daniel Levy appointed him in June, 2023. Postecoglou led his previous club, Glasgow Celtic, to a domestic treble, after which it was announced he was a candidate for the 2023 FIFA Coach of the Year award. The nominees included:

  • Pep Guardiola – Manchester City
  • Simone Inzaghi – Inter Milan
  • Ange Postecoglou – Glasgow Celtic
  • Luciano Spalletti - Napoli
  • Xavi Hernandez – FC Barcelona

The winner was Pep Guardiola. You can see a full list of winners since 2010 on the Top End Sports website.

Postecoglou’s first season in charge at Tottenham went well, and in September 2023, he became the first manager of an EPL club to win the Premier League Manager of the Month consecutively in his first two months in charge. But the 2024/25 season had gone seriously off the rails due in part to the ongoing, extensive list of injured players.

With 29 league games played at the time of writing, Spurs have won only 10, having lost 15 and drawn 4. They've been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions, and their only chance of Champions League football next season is if they win the Europa League, and that is now looking like a long shot. However, chairman Daniel Levy has set a clear expectation—"Tottenham must qualify for European football next season, or a change in leadership will be considered.”

If you’re looking for a striker whose Premier League goalscorer odds meant you could win a wager, it wouldn’t be any of Tottenham’s players. Mohamed Salah leads the race with 27 goals, but the closest a Spurs player gets is Brennan Johnson with nine, leaving him in 14th position in the goalscoring charts, the same as his team’s position in the EPL table.

But the final nail in Postecoglou’s coffin is his unwillingness to change the team’s playing style to counter the player selection problem. It’s his second favourite for being sacked next with odds of 5/2.

3rd Favourite for the sack – Ivan Juric (Southampton)

Sitting firmly at the foot of the EPL table, we have Southampton with a lamentable 9 points from 29 games, having only managed to score 21 goals, but conceding 70. Current top Premier League goalscorer Mo Salah is currently massively odds-on at 1/12 to stay top of that table, and if Cole Palmer (14 goals to date) is 1000/1, you can only imagine what odds Paul Onuachu would be as the Saints’ top scorer with a paltry 3 goals – probably over a million to 1.

Southampton’s relegation all but assured, and the only excuse manager Ivan Juric can offer up is the fact that he inherited a sub-standard squad of players in terms of EPL quality. The odds of him receiving the sack next are 4/ 1.

Odds summary for next EPL team manager to be sacked

  • 8/11 - Ruud van Nistelrooy
  • 5/2 - Ange Postecoglou
  • 4/1 - Ivan Juric
  • 12/1 - Enzo Maresca
  • 20/1 - Ruben Amorim
  • 25/1 - Pep Guardiola
  • 33/1 - Vitor Pereira, Kieran McKenna
  • 50/1 - Mikel Arteta, Fabian Hurzeler, Graham Potter
  • 66/1 - Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, Eddie Howe, Thomas Frank
  • 80/1 - David Moyes
  • 100/1 - Arne Slot, Nuno Espirito Santo, Unai Emery
  • (Odds correct at time of publication)

The beautiful game is likely to be not so beautiful for any of the above-listed EPL football team managers should they be fired. But, hey – it comes with the territory (not to mention the tasty pay packet).
