Group F team summary

  • Belgium have been living on the promise of their potential for too long, and Roberto Martinez will know that time is running out for this golden generation to convert their talent into tangible silverware. A quarter-final loss in 2014 and third place finish in 2018 suggest that anything less than an appearance in this year's final will be deemed a failure, and despite a couple of recent hiccups against the Dutch, they remain strongly fancied to go deep in Qatar

  • Croatia will be looking to rekindle the big-stage magic that earned them a spot in the final in 2018. Since enduring an indifferent performance at last year's Euros, Croatia have recharged, and only an inexplicable 3-0 home defeat to Austria has put a dent in a resurgence that has seen them win ten and draw four of their subsequent 15 games during World Cup qualifying and a table-topping Nations League campaign.

  • Morocco Morocco will be looking to improve upon their 2018 World Cup effort in Russia, when they could count themselves unlucky to be on the receiving end of late goals in both their 1-0 defeat to Iran and in their valiant 2-2 draw with Spain. Their form suggests they will again be difficult to beat, but in a tough group their hopes will probably be higher than their realistic expectations.

  • Canada look a different proposition to the team that went goalless and pointless in their only other World Cup appearance in Mexico in 1986. Topping their Concacaf qualifying group above the likes of Mexico, USA and Costa Rica suggests a team that is more than capable of competing on the biggest stage, and although their form has been indifferent since, they will travel to Qatar with some optimism.

Crunch games

Belgium and Croatia will both hope to have two wins apiece under the belts at the expense of Canada and Morocco before they meet in their own eye-catching clash in the final set of Group F fixtures on December 1st. Croatia look potentially the most likely to slip up in either of their opening two games, especially against the unpredictable Moroccans, and if that is the case they will be under huge pressure to get a result against one of the tournament favourites, while the two underdog teams will hope to have more than the Group F wooden spoon to play for when they battle it out at the same time .

  • Probable qualifiers:   Belgium & Croatia

Possible dark horses:   Canada
